Parental Stress: Diagnosis and Gender in Special Educational Needs

Hi, I’m Jerusha Lear, a Psychology student at Staffordshire University. My research explores perceived stress among parents of children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), focusing on the diagnostic journey and parent gender. The study highlights how stress can remain ongoing throughout both pre- and post-diagnostic phases, emphasising the importance of timely, inclusive, and family-focused support. My project also explores the underrepresentation of fathers and non-binary parents within SEN research, advocating for more diverse and holistic interventions. Overall, the research aims to raise awareness of the emotional challenges families face and the importance of supporting all caregivers throughout the journey.
