Exploring the occupational experiences and perceptions of female officers.

Hegemonic masculinity is a fundamental characteristic of a gendered institution which favoured white heterosexual males and created problems such as discrimination, sexism, misogyny and bullying for females looking to enter this masculine space. The hegemonic masculinity within policing produces a rationale for how male officers should behave, especially towards their female colleagues, negatively impacting females who feel outcast and excluded from police work. This study is important because previous literature has illustrated that females are underrepresented within law enforcement and has reported that females encounter cultural sex-based harassment and have to face multiple obstacles, such as gender discrimination.
