Exploring the Impact of Upbringing on Young Adults' Mental Health

I am a psychology student with a strong interest in mental health, early experiences, and how family dynamics shape well-being. My project explores how young adults in the UK reflect on their childhood and adolescent parenting experiences and how these have influenced their mental health. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), I conducted interviews with five participants. I identified three key themes: emotional suppression across generations, the lasting impact of parental bonds, and the effects of conflicting parenting approaches. One exceptional case highlights the benefits of supportive and open parenting. This study offers insights into the long-term impact of early caregiving.
