Cheating AI: Designing Adaptive Opponents Through Player Psychology
I am a Games Design & Programming student focused on gameplay systems, player psychology, and AI. My project explores how partially deceptive AI opponents influence player enjoyment, trust, and perceptions of fairness. Using a custom Unity prototype, I designed and tested three AI archetypes ranging from random behaviour to adaptive and partially cheating opponents. Through player testing and analysis, the project investigates how challenge, agency, and hidden AI advantages affect emotional engagement, revealing how carefully designed unfair systems can create tension and memorable gameplay without completely breaking player trust.
