Plane of Planetary

Ricky Chen’s pieces present the hidden boundaries of the manmade and the natural, through origami sculptures, using different origami folding techniques to manipulate the mundane material of paper into various natural forms. The work plays with micro and macro scales to broaden the perception of nature, exploring the physical world or universe. The sculptural forms are embedded with the meaning and symbolism of flowers/plants and human relationships with the natural world.

Plane of Planetary works involves delving into astrological traditions and how some provide a link between the cosmoses. Some human relationships, like botanists, associate plants with planets, based on the plant’s features, which is presented through these origami sculptures. This immersive installation presents beauty within the organisation of our universe, whilst pondering our existence within the vastness of the universe. It questions the nature of colour and form, through the physical manipulation of material to create three-dimensional forms, delving into Kusudama history to transform the original medicinal flower ball from the ancient, into something beautiful. Paper flowers are known for their longevity; being able to preserve their beauty, whilst fresh flowers wilt over time; symbolising eternal love, beauty and celebration of a new beginning.
