By challenging the traditional conventions of landscape through the means of experimental techniques, such as the art of walking, drawing, and writing as research. Acting as a Dérive, Karl translates an intimate experience and interaction of these places, geology, natural phenomena, and philosophical realms to the viewer. It is the remembered perceptions of being in a place that stays with us and that is most important in his work; appearing as fragments of memory and emotion about what is seen, felt, and understood. He explores his surroundings through material to uncover the less physical terrain through the archaeology of painting.
