Exploring Electronic Waste Solutions for a Sustainable Computer Mouse

I’m a third year Mechanical Engineering student with an interest in business, product design and tackling sustainability issues. Last year I became interested in the possibilities of bioplastics and how they could be implemented into everyday products to mitigate the damaging effects of electronics waste.

This project takes an everyday item, the computer mouse, and investigates ways to decrease the harmful effects of its lifecycle by using sustainable design principles. After designing, stress testing and prototyping, there was a 93% decrease in carbon output per shell unit while maintaining low production costs.
