I have always enjoyed the practical aspects of technical subjects such as engineering and design & technology and have found that practical knowledge and experience helps develop greater understanding of the subject as a whole. For this reason I see the practical aspects of technical subjects as incredibly important.
When I was informed that there is a practical skills gap in newer engineers I developed a project that would provide students studying engineering with practical experience using a CNC Lathe, this is supplied through use of a curriculum support package that can supplement a curriculum or module.
